The Ultimate Iced Coffee Recipe

For those of us who are fortunate enough to live in Australia, the return of the warmer months really is something special. The promise of longer days and warmer nights, generates a real buzz and a sense of excitement amongst Australians.


It is definitely an exciting time of year for me! With the Christmas break just around the corner and knowing I’ll get to spend that time with family and friends eating great food and taking time out to relax is something that I really look forward to at this time of the year.


The warmer weather also opens up more possibilities for brewing our much loved coffee! The explosion in popularity of cold drip and cold brew coffee in Australia has been immense and really not surprising given our warmer climate.


Put simply, there is nothing quite like a chilled coffee on a hot summer’s morning (or even as a late afternoon pick me up). The only problem is, unlike traditional extraction methods like espresso, aeropress or french press coffee, cold drip coffee takes a lot of time to brew (sometimes up to 24 hours).


But don’t worry, because here at Loop Coffee, we have put our heads together and devised a very simple (but also very delicious) iced coffee recipe that you can put together in less than 6 minutes. This iced coffee is so easy to make, that even on your busiest mornings, you’ll have time to make a refreshing, iced coffee to set you up for the day ahead.

To be honest, this delicious iced coffee can be enjoyed all year round and is extremely simple to make! We’ve jotted down a few ‘trade secrets’ which will give you everything you need to know to create a drink that will (dare we say it) rival any iced coffee (cold drip or the like) you are likely to get your hands on :)

Here’s what you’ll need to make the best iced coffee you have ever tasted:



  • Two Loop Coffee premium coffee pods. Pro tip: we love to use our Cappio blend for this recipe because it has been blended in way that allows the coffee to really shine through the chilled milk.

  • Enough fresh ice to fill your glass.  The exact amount will depend on what size glass you choose. Pro tip: if you can, try and use filtered water for your ice cubes and also in your Nespresso machine water reservoir. The filtered water removes any unwanted impurities and leaves clean, fresh tasting water.

  • Enough fresh, chilled full cream milk to fill your chosen glass. You can, of course use any type of milk with this recipe, including skim, soy, almond etc.

  • Optional - sweetener to taste (i.e. sugar, honey, stevia etc).



  • One tall glass between 300ml and 500ml for your iced coffee (we use a 500ml tall glass).

  • One small glass to extract your coffee into.

  • One shallow bowl filled with iced water (for chilling the fresh espresso).

  • A Nespresso machine.



  1. Chill your glass - fill your tall glass with fresh ice and set aside in your freezer while you prepare your coffee.

  2. Extract your coffee - using your Nespresso machine, extract the coffee from the two Loop Coffee pods into a small glass. To get the most flavour into your iced coffee, we recommend using the ‘short button’ instead of the ‘lungo’ button.

  3. Chilling your fresh espresso - take your small glass which is filled with your fresh espresso and sit the glass in the shallow bowl filled with iced water. The iced water level only needs to reach the top of your fresh espresso. We recommend chilling your espresso for around five minutes. Pro tip: using the iced water bath allows the espresso to be chilled quickly without needing to add hot espresso directly to the ice. This prevents the hot espresso from melting the ice and watering down your iced coffee.

  4. Add your espresso to your chilled tall glass - before you add your chilled espresso to your tall glass full of ice, take a minute to drain out any water that is sitting at the bottom of the glass (you may not have any and this will depend on the temperature of the room at the time). Tip your chilled espresso into your tall glass full of ice and add any sweetener to taste. Pro tip: for the same reasons we suggest chilling your espresso, draining any excess water from your glass prevents your iced coffee from being watered down.

  5. Add your chilled milk - take your fresh, chilled milk from the fridge and pour it into the tall glass with the ice and chilled espresso.

  6. Enjoy! - there you have it! A very simple and extremely delicious, iced coffee which is sure to become your ‘go-to’ coffee drink during the warmer months (or anytime you feel like it).

            There’s nothing quite like kicking back on a Friday afternoon after a long hard week, drink in hand and enjoying the company of good friends.  Of recent times, the espresso martini has become the quintessential Friday afternoon cocktail and for good reason. The smooth, velvety mouth feel of a well made espresso martini makes it so enjoyable to drink and has the added benefit of giving the drinker a bit of a “pick me up” for whatever Friday night may have in store.


            It’s easy to see why the espresso martini has become an absolute classic. It’s super quick to put together, it’ll keep you going well into the night after a long week and it tastes amazing!


            As lovers of all things awesome, the team here at Loop Coffee would love to share with you all what we believe is (possibly) the greatest espresso martini recipe you are likely to come across!

            It’s Friday afternoon and you have organised to have a group of your closest friends over for dinner. The plan is for everyone to arrive at 7:30pm for a few drinks with dinner ready to go by 8pm. You’ve got the menu planned out and you’ve even arranged to knock off work a little earlier so you can get everything ready to put on the best spread your friends have ever seen!


            Next thing you know, your boss comes to you at 4pm and asks you to “quickly” help out with something before you leave for the day. Finally (after a couple of hours!!) you’re walking out the door at 6pm, you’re exhausted and you haven’t even picked up the groceries for dinner yet!


            Sound familiar….?


            Not only do you need to get cracking in the kitchen but you’ll need to have a few drinks ready and waiting for your friends when they arrive.


            But first things first - you deserve a drink yourself!


            Our recipe


            There are a lot of espresso martini recipes out there and they can vary a lot.  The recipe we are sharing with you today is very true to the original and is a drink that I have had a fair amount of practice mixing for revellers in bars and clubs around the globe during my days as a bartender.


            The real secret to the perfect espresso martini is all in the name.  That is, only fresh espresso will do for this recipe.  Trust us when we say that no instant coffee, coffee flavoured syrup or other coffee alternative will give you that signature espresso flavour!


            Loop Coffee’s premium coffee capsules make it really easy for you to quickly extract fresh espresso for your espresso martinis using your Nespresso machine.  All you need to do is make sure you have a few of our premium coffee pods on hand and you’re well on your way to mixing the best espresso martinis your friends have ever tasted!


            Another crucial element that’s needed to mix amazing espresso martinis is quality spirits. Since you will be using our premium, Australian made coffee pods as the base for your martini, it only makes sense to pair our coffee with premium, Australian made spirits.


            Australia has enjoyed an explosion in the popularity of boutique distilleries in recent times, which has resulted in a great range of premium quality spirits becoming available to satisfy all tastes and budgets. As a small Australian business ourselves, we love to support other Australian businesses where we can and we are big fans of Mr Black cold press coffee liqueur and Smallmouth premium vodka for this particular recipe.


            What you’ll need



            • One shot (around 25ml) of fresh, chilled espresso extracted from one Loop Coffee premium coffee capsule (more about chilling your espresso below).  We recommend using our Cappio blend for this recipe but any of our premium blends will give you an amazing espresso martini. 

            • 60ml of Smallmouth premium vodka (or another good quality vodka).

            • 40ml of Mr Black cold press coffee liqueur (or another good quality coffee liqueur).

            • Plenty of fresh ice (we recommend using filtered water when making your ice).


            • Martini glasses (the glasses we use are approximately 165 ml in volume).

            • A cocktail shaker (e.g. Cobbler, Boston or French shaker. Any cocktail shaker should do the trick).

            • A strainer (may or may not be required depending on which type of cocktail shaker you own and whether the strainer is built into the shaker itself).

            • A jigger for measuring your spirits.




            1. Extract your coffee - using the ‘short’ button on your Nespresso machine, extract the coffee from your Loop Coffee pod into a small glass. Take your small glass which is filled with your fresh espresso and sit the glass in a shallow bowl filled with iced water. We recommend chilling your espresso in the ice bath for a few minutes before mixing your cocktail to prevent the hot espresso melting the ice and watering down your martini.

            2. Chill your glass - grab some of the fresh ice you’ve set aside and fill your martini glasses. Set martini glasses aside to chill.

            3. Mix your spirits - measure out your vodka and coffee liqueur into your cocktail shaker. Now add your chilled espresso and finally, plenty of fresh ice.

            4. Shake, shake, shake! - vigorously shake the combined coffee, spirits and ice for at least sixty seconds. Shaking your cocktail well helps develop that signature ‘crema’ you see on top of espresso martinis.

            5. Strain and serve - empty the ice from the martini glasses.  Now strain and serve your espresso martini into your chilled glasses.

            6. Enjoy! - take a moment to enjoy the rich, velvety flavour of your very own espresso martini. But don’t get too comfortable, you’ve still got some entertaining to do!



            Note: some espresso martini recipes call for sweetener to be added.  Generally, we prefer not to add any sweetener because there is usually enough sweetness in this drink (depending on what coffee liqueur you are using).  However, if you do wish to add additional sweetener, try adding between 10ml and 15ml of sugar syrup when you mix your spirits.

            Our story so far.....

            It’s been just over a month since we launched Loop Coffee and the time has really flown by!  The interest in our coffee and the support we have received from you all has been truly amazing - a big thank you to everyone who has joined the Loop Coffee family :)


            Throughout this first month we have been getting a lot of great feedback from our customers and also a lot of questions from people wanting to know, not only more about our coffee, but also more about our business and how we got started.


            In this blog post, I thought I would take some time out to tell you all a bit about how we got started to see if we can answer some of these questions. In particular, I thought I would talk a little bit about the company’s vision and the direction we would really love to take the business.


            A bit of the background story


            My wife and I have always had a passion for the finer things in life - we really love to spoil each other! Fine dining, luxury travel and of course great coffee are just some of the things that we love.


            Like many Australians, my day doesn’t start until I’ve had my coffee. Over a number of years, my enjoyment of coffee slowly turned into a real passion (or obsession - depending on how you look at it). I started out experimenting with various coffee brewing techniques, including french press, aeropress, espresso and capsule coffee.


            Although I really enjoyed tinkering with these techniques on the weekend when I had the time, I found myself continually going back to capsule coffee during the working week even though I was generally left disappointed with the quality of coffee from my Nespresso machine. For a long time I just thought a subpar coffee was the sacrifice that needed to be made for the sake of convenience.


            This really bugged me and I kept thinking to myself:


            “why should I continue to settle for mediocre coffee from my capsule machine when there is surely something better out there?”


            After a lot of research and experimenting with other “so-called” premium coffee capsules I got the answer to my question loud and clear - there really wasn’t anything better out there!


            Frustrated with this answer, I was ready to go back to my Rancilio Silvia espresso machine when my wife, clearly tired of my obsessing over this experiment, said “why don’t you just make your own?” You always hear entrepreneurs talking about their “light bulb” moment, that is when an idea really clicks! I can certainly say this was that moment for me!


            While continuing to plug away at my day job in the legal profession, I started tinkering with the idea of pairing premium quality, small batch roasted coffee with the convenience of a capsule that would be compatible with Nespresso coffee machines.


            After many months of research and sampling different blends, the result of all this hard work was astounding! A perfectly balanced, full flavoured coffee straight out of a Nespresso compatible capsule.  What started out as a simple experiment quickly grew from an idea to craft a boutique range of Nespresso* compatible coffee pods into an online specialty store where our customers can browse and purchase some of the finest coffee products available in Australia.


            I am extremely proud of what my wife and I have achieved over the past twelve months and I can’t wait to see where we are in the next twelve months.

            Where to from here?


            We’ve had an incredible start to our new venture and we are both really looking forward to getting our coffee out there for more and more people to enjoy! We still get super excited when we see orders coming in from new customers and of course from our return customers!


            We started this new venture with a vision of giving people an opportunity to enjoy Australian made, premium quality coffee with all the convenience that comes with their Nespresso machine and this will continue to be our goal in the months and years ahead!


            We are working on some exciting new developments and hopefully we will be able to share some of these with you in the not too distant future. With the end of 2016 creeping up on us, we are really looking forward to a big 2017 for Loop Coffee.

            Loop Coffee is live!

            To all of our visitors, a very warm welcome to our brand new online store and to our first ever blog entry!  We are very excited to be up and running and sincerely appreciate you taking time out of your day to come by and visit us - many thanks :)

            By way of introduction, my name is Luke and I am the founder of Loop Coffee.

            Loop Coffee is a small, family business in every sense. My wife and I established the business in our hometown of Brisbane, Australia to fill what we saw as a hole in the Australian market for a premium range of Australian made, Nespresso® compatible coffee capsules (also commonly known as pods).

            Only the finest, premium quality coffee is used in Loop Coffee capsules and the whole process from the roasting of the raw coffee beans to the packaging of the freshly ground coffee into our recyclable coffee pods happens right here in Queensland, Australia!

            I’m really looking forward to building this blog into an interesting and useful resource for you all to not only learn more about our company and coffee products but also as a place for us to share recipes, news and other great stuff!

            This first blog entry is the first in a series of three.  

            The next entry ‘our company’ will give some more insights into how the idea for Loop Coffee came about and a bit more about Loop Coffee’s core vision and company values.


            The third entry in this series ‘our founder’ will give a little background about me as the founder of Loop Coffee and also some of the background story of how Loop Coffee was established.
